KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysia's Islamic opposition has dropped from its election platform a pledge to create a theocratic state, and is instead promising to slash the cost of living and ensure racial equality.

The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS, will campaign in the March 8 general elections with the slogan "a nation of care and opportunity," party President Abdul Hadi Awang told reporters Thursday.

He said the party is promising lower fuel prices, a minimum wage, free university education and more affordable health care.

PAS, which is known to want strict Islamic rule in the country, is unlikely to win the elections given the ruling coalition's dominance.

By focusing on social issues rather than Islam, it appears to be softening its hard-line image, which has alienated not only non-Muslims but also some within the Islamic community.

"We offer equal justice to all, justice in economy opportunities and freedom of religion," Abdul Hadi said. "We promise a government that is trustworthy, just and clean which will be able to give the people a better life."

In 2004 polls, PAS called for the creation of an Islamic state with harsh laws such as amputating the limbs of thieves and stoning adulterers to death.

Asked why its Islamic agenda was not mentioned in the current party platform, Abdul Hadi said it was already understood by supporters and non-Muslims and did not need to be mentioned again specifically.

Abdul Hadi said PAS stands a "good chance" of capturing three states in state elections that will be held along with the parliamentary polls. He predicted the party will retain Kelantan, the only one of Malaysia's 13 states under opposition control, and also win neighboring Terengganu and northern Kedah.

In its election platform, PAS said national oil company Petronas should be made accountable to Parliament, rather than reporting directly to the prime minister, and that its profits should be used to benefit the people.

PAS is the biggest rival of the United Malays National Organization, the leading party in the National Front coalition, for the support of ethnic Malay Muslims, who account for about 60 percent of Malaysia's 27 million people. UMNO espouses a generally moderate form of Islam.

The National Front, which won 91 percent of the parliamentary seats in 2004 polls, is expected to easily return to power but with a reduced majority.

PAS, which held only six seats in the recently dissolved Parliament, plans to contest 65 of the 222 seats in the upcoming ballot, Abdul Hadi said.

Oh cool. Any1 keen on living in a theocratic state? Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the religion, nor the Malays. In fact, I've loads of Malay friends as well as friends from other races. Sometimes we just have to practice a little control over some stuff like religion. All religion teaches us to do good. In fact, none says that killing is good. Anyway, too much of a good thing is bad. Right? Any1 gonna stand by me and protest this?

If Malaysian officials' logic holds, is sexier than Gwen Stefani and the Pussycat Dolls and just as potentially morally corrupting as Beyoncé.

The Canadian faux-punkette has become the latest Western pop star to face trouble in the Asian country as she was uninvited from performing a planned Kuala Lumpur gig. The Muslim-majority country's Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry canceled the show today amid growing protests and claims the singer was, quite simply, "too sexy."

While that, of course, is entirely subjective, the timing of the planned gig—just two days before the nation's Independence Day on Aug. 29—was not and, per a senior ministry official, was the real reason for the cancellation.

"It is not timely," Shukran Ibrahim told the Associated Press. "It's not in the spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for."

Another unnamed ministry official told Reuters that the concert was indeed off, but not for good, adding that the date had simply been postponed and not scrapped all together.

"We did not reject the concert," the official said. "We asked them to find another date as the original date is so close to the Independence Day. That's the only reason."

Not according to the headlines.

Earlier this week, officials with the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party's youth wing vocalized their objections to the show, regardless of its timing, saying Lavigne was "considered too sexy" for them: "We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance."

As it happens, Lavigne is not the first to fall foul of the strict standards imposed on female singers in the country.

Last year, Beyoncé pulled the plug on her own planned Kuala Lumpur gig amid similar complaints, but blamed her relocating the show to Indonesia on nothing more than a "scheduling conflict." Just months earlier, Stefani was allowed to perform only after agreeing to wear less revealing costumes, while the promoters of a 2006 Pussycat Dolls show were fined because of the group's "sexually suggestive routines."
